If you’re planning to run some advertisement on radio stations, you would first need to know how to approach the radio stations. Surely you can’t just pick up the phone and say “Hey, can I be a guest on your radio show?”because the chances are you’ll instantly get hung up. However, it’s not a daunting task either. All you need to do is some preparation work, and be tactful when communicating with the radio station people, so that you’ll get what you want – to get free radio advertising.

Step 1: Find out what’s in trend)

Did you know the first things that radio people do daily is read the morning newspaper? This is because they need to be aware of the trending topics that people would want to know more about. Similarly, you can’t just appear on the show and talk about your dog. You need to talk about the topic that people want to hear about. So, your first assignment – get into the habit of reading the morning newspaper and take notice of the popular topics that can be related to your field, such that that you’ll have a particular topic to cover, although your main objective is to get free radio publicity.

Step 2: Create content that kills

Once you know what you want to talk about, start creating killer content for the show you’re aiming to get on. Usually a guest spot on a radio show allows you to speak anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, or may be more, depending on the nature of the radio show. Now, make a complete outline of everything you would want to talk about when you’re on the show.

Step 3: Start calling

Next, it’s time to call your selected radio stations. At this point, you might be asking: how do I get their phone numbers? Well, didn’t you realize that radio stations repeat their number on air all day long? They welcome people to call up. So call.

When your call is answered by the producer or radio host of the show, do clearly relay to the person in a professional way:

  • Who you are and what you do
  • What you want to talk about and why it will be interesting to their listeners
  • Ask if it would be alright to mention about your business, websites, products or services

If the radio show doesn’t allow you to promote your business in the program, then there’s no point for you to secure a guest spot in their show. Just thank them and continue to contact the next station in your area, until you finally secure one slot in one of your local radio stations.
